"PRETTY GOOD FOR A GIRL":
GENDER DIFFERENCES IN THE 1950s

Grade Level: Grade 8

Time Allocation: 2 - 3 days

Overview:

Using a variety of materials, students will learn about the gender gap that existed during the 1950s. Students will work in groups to collect information that will enable them to compare expectations, opportunities, and accomplishments of men amd women in different arenas. Students will make an oral presentation to the class that will include a visual aid (chart, graph, poster, overhead or PowerPoint presentation).

Lesson Objectives:

  • Demonstrate an accurate understanding of popular culture and of gender differences in the 1950s
  • Access and use information from a variety of sources
  • Discriminate between relevant and irrelevant information
  • Paraphrase/summarize information in a chart
  • Make an effective and interesting oral presentation
