A READING GROUP FOR TEACHERS

Fall 2007

The Center for the Teaching of American History at Binghamton University is continuing a non-credit reading group for teachers interested in getting together with other professionals to read and discuss recent books on various topics in American history. The books are free; the setting is structured, but relaxed.

Religion in Modern America

The Books:

Michael Kazin, A Godly Hero: The Life of William Jennings Bryan (2006).

Michael Kazin's biography offers an interpretation of the noted Populist and presidential candidate who thirty years after his unsuccessful bid for the presidency served as legal counsel for the state of Tennessee in the famous Scopes Trial.

Kathleen Flake, The Politics of American Religious Identity: The Seating of Senator Reed Smoot, Mormon Apostle (2004).

Kathleen Flake explores the controversy surrounding the election of a Mormon to the U.S. Senate during a period of widespread hostility to Mormonism due to the practice of polygamy. She explores the modernization of the church and its growing acceptance in the American mainstream.
