The Election of 1860
Kevin McManus & Susan Phelps
Binghamton High School, Binghamton, NY

Printer-friendly Version

In this creative lesson plan, students use video technology to create imaginary political commercials for the election of 1860. After gaining necessary background information through videos, discussion questions, and internet research, students design, script, and film their own political commercial for the campaign of either Douglas or Lincoln. Students work in teams, identify their target audience and strategy, and use storyboard techniques to create effective political advertising. In addition to bringing the election of 1860 to life and accessing student interest in video technology, this lesson allows students to develop a multifaceted, issue-oriented understanding of this key moment in American history.
