The New Immigrants

A Documents Based Question by Mary Broczkowski
History 530b, Spring 2005

Printer-friendly Version

This question is based on the accompanying documents (1-8). The question is designed to test your ability to work with historical documents. Some of the documents have been edited for the purposes of the question. As you analyze the documents, take into account the source of each document and any point of view that may be presented.

Historical Context:

In the late nineteenth century, the United States experienced numerous social changes resulting from the Industrial Revolution. Railroads moved both product and people faster than ever before. The increased use of machinery resulted in rapid changes in product manufacturing. Lifestyles within America changed, as families left cottage industries to work in metropolitan factories. America was seen as a land of opportunity.

Task:

To complete Part A, please analyze Documents 1-8 and answer the question following each historical document. Using information from the documents and your knowledge of United States history, answer the questions that follow each document in Part A. Your answers to the questions will help you write the Part B essay, in which you will be asked to:

Discuss the challenges immigrants faced in America after 1880, and review some of the ways in which immigration issues were addressed.
